Conference
CITY BEHIND WALLS event is an activity of Trenčín, one of the three oldest cities in Slovakia, that follows up on the conference of walled towns of Europe called "Fortress as a Corset - opressing or inspiring" organised last year in a Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Trenčín, being the only Slovak representative to the Conference, was one of the 18 participating European cities. The final Declaration, became the Dutch message calling for increase of the EU funding into the area of monument reconstruction and renewal of walled towns.
Aims
The Conference in Trenčín focused on directing its message more inward - towards the identity of historic towns in contemporary Europe. The Conference identified the building bricks that form the identity of European historic towns, as well as their image-creating components. Participating cities were asked to present their example-studies, which formed the basis of discussion and mutual sharing of experience during the Conference. The special attention was paid to the importance of multi-discipline communication and collaboration.
Partners
The partners of the conference were the City of ´s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, and JANUS (Joint Architecture Network of Urban Synergy) that calls for multi-disciplinary communication regarding urban areas of towns .
International support
The conference was held with the attention of European cultural institution Europa Nostra and of an international association of walled towns Walled Towns Friendship Circle.
Auspices
The Conference City Behind Walls was held under the Auspices of Ján FIGEĽ, Member of European Commission, responsible for education, training, culture and multilingualism.
